Traditionally wedding invitations began “Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Harris request the pleasure of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Jessica to….” Nowadays the bride and groom might be paying and could start by saying “Jessica Harris and John Smythe request the honour of your presence at their marriage….”. Or less formally they might start out: “With joy in our hearts, Jessica Harris and John Smythe request the pleasure of your presence at their wedding celebration”.

Wording, poems or verses for wedding invitations was at one time, in the not too distant past, very traditional, but some of those rules are changing. It adhered to the strict Victorian rules of etiquette. In the 21st century with the growing number of blended families it is not always the mother and father of the bride paying for the wedding. Therefore, things have changed. For example if the bride and groom are paying for the wedding, but would like to acknowledge a parent or parents on the invitation the wording might start: “Jessica Harris and John Smythe and their parents Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Harris request the pleasure of your presence…”
